How are lab-grown diamonds made? A two-minute guide to understanding it.

Diamonds are a brilliant splendor from nature, formed under high heat and pressure in the Earth's crust. Their crystal clarity is beautiful and precious. However, now nature has a formidable competitor as gem-quality diamonds can be grown in laboratories.

Lab-grown diamonds are so dazzling that even skeptics are impressed, despite the fact that industrial-grade diamonds have been grown for many years. While they may not be as flashy, these diamonds have a gem-quality brilliance.

They begin with an automated laser that cuts tiny diamond slivers from a real diamond.

They are five millimeters wide, a quarter of a millimeter thick, roughly as thin as human hair.

Laser can turn diamonds black, so they are polished on steel blocks.

Epoxy resin is applied around the slivers to prevent the diamonds from slipping. This type of epoxy resin requires an activator, and a chemical reaction causes the resin to solidify completely around the slivers within seconds, securing them to the steel blocks.

The steel blocks are threaded onto metal arms attached to a threaded rod, lowered onto a wheel with diamond particles, and weighted down. As the wheel rotates, the diamond slivers are pressed into the diamond particles, creating the necessary friction to remove any dirt or debris.

A leveling device is able to confirm that the slivers are placed in the correct position.

Diamond is the hardest mineral and only other diamonds can effectively polish diamonds. The difference before and after polishing is astonishing, and the diamond slivers have transformed from dark to crystal clear.

The cultivation can now begin. The technician uses a suction cup tool to place several slivers on a specially designed metal base, arranging them neatly and providing them with room to expand, as these diamond slivers will become larger.

He covers them with a metal box and injects hydrogen and methane gas. The machine heats the diamond slivers to several thousand degrees Celsius with appropriate pressure.

The gas forms plasma which is poured onto the diamond slivers, causing them to grow.

In just two short weeks, the diamond slivers have grown into gems that are at least ten times larger than before, a tremendous transformation. However, these rough diamonds still require further processing before they can emit their radiance.

Apply epoxy resin onto the tip of a steel rod and place the synthetic diamond in the center of the resin-coated tip.

Then the steel rod will be taken into the laser room by a robotic arm, which will rotate the rod and allow the laser to shape the synthetic diamond from all angles. This process will reveal the gem's sparkling brilliance.

The technician uses a jeweler's magnifying glass to inspect the quality of the synthetic diamond, and then places it into another polishing wheel. This wheel is similar to the one used to clean the diamond slivers earlier, but it will shape the grown gem into a classic diamond shape. This process will bring out the diamond's sparkling brilliance.

It only took two weeks to cultivate this diamond, a process that resembles the fast-moving geological principles. This is because true natural forces must undergo thousands of years to push real diamonds to the earth's surface.
